Artist Statement
My most recent work has been a working out of my memories, shrouded in the mists of time, that stem from the womb. I am a bereaved-at-birth twin. This state of being has driven a life-long interest in the nebulous; those thoughts and feelings that are so hard to pin down and explain to others. John Donne wrote, “No man is an island, Entire of itself.” We are relational beings, and the concept of relationship permeates my work.
My installations have all been about emotional relationships; mostly about the loss of a relationship, the expression of deeply felt hurt. My work with sheer fabrics speaks of the difficulty in grasping a feeling or memory or thought or idea that is just out of reach. In a similar way, reflections in glass create a liminal space where two, often unrelated, spaces are layered one over the other. Reflections seem to be a doorway into an alternate reality, echoing that fact that we all see the world differently. This interest is evident in my video and sound works. The concept of working in layers carries over into my prints and pastel works, where both media lend themselves to this way of building up images.
Currently I am working on an installation in the Rushton Triangular Lodge in Northamptonshire, commissioned by the University of Northampton and English Heritage. The Lodge was designed and built during difficult and dangerous times. The artwork expresses two facets of the underlying issue of allegiance.
Various artists inspire my work, particularly: the visual conundrums of MC Escher; the big solid colourful layers in the works of Judith Scott; the ephemeral environments of Ann Hamilton’s liminal spaces; and the sound journeys of Janet Cardiff.
As well as working in textiles, I use paint, print, sound, video and collage. I have been fortunate to be able to study Fine Art at the University of Northampton for both the BA and the MA. I found having the space to explore different media enriching and exciting.
Artist Bio
I am a painter who also enjoys print-making and working digitally. Artists who have influenced my work include the Fauvists, the Surrealists and the graphic artist M.C. Escher. I studied Fine Art at the University of Northampton gaining my Masters with merit and a 1st class honours BA.
