There is a thread that runs through my work. It’s the phrase, ‘We see through a glass darkly.’ It comes from one of St. Paul’s letters to the early Christian church. This lack of clarity of vision, of understanding what exactly we are seeing, I think is not just spiritual but also intellectual and physical.
I have always been fascinated by reflections and the visual conundrums they create. In reflections, reality is distorted. I think this is why St. Paul’s phrase captures my imagination and that is why whether consciously or unconsciously it pervades my work.
The films capture overlooked parts of a whole scene narrowing down to an otherwise unnoticed parallel world. By capturing them on film they are not lost to us forever; they are brought to our notice. The reflections carried on the glass or shiny surface disappear as soon as our focus changes, but having seen them the memory remains.
The works in Hidden were prompted by my experiences of the subject.

I trained as a Pregnancy Crisis Advisor and a counsellor for women suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following a Termination. My interest in this work grew from my experience of unexpected pregnancy and the death of my son at the age of 19 weeks.
I love the mountains in winter and summer, whether speeding down a slope on skis, or walking, or appreciating their grandeur from my motorbike. I have had the privilege of raising a family and travelling the world. All these experiences inspire and inform my work.
